After their employer goes out of business, old school salesmen Billy and Nick find themselves unemployed and too under skilled to land a new job. Desperate for a big break, Billy applies for both of them to become interns at internet giant, Google. After a seemingly disastrous interview, they are both accepted into Google's internship program. Once there they have trouble fitting in, but try to the best of their abilities to make the cut.
Billy McMahon and Nick Campbell find themselves out of work when their employer goes out of business. As old school salesmen, they lack the skills and attitude to find new jobs in their current careers. Billy, dissatisfied with the hand life has given them, takes the long shot and applies both of them for Google's internship program. Despite not being in the normal age range for a typical intern, they are accepted after they give highly unorthodox and unique answers to the internship interview. Billy and Nick make their way to the Googleplex to start their internship. Once there they are not made to feel welcome among their fellow interns and even the head of the program, Mr. Chetty, makes it known to them that they do not belong there. All of the interns form teams and Billy and Nick are stuck with the interns that are considered outsiders, even in a room full of tech savvy geeks. Their team consist of Stuart, who cannot take his eyes of his phone, Yo-Yo, a shy homeschooled boy, Neha, a girl who seems to have it all together, and their team leader, Lyle. The teams are to compete in various challenges and only the overall winners will be guaranteed full jobs at Google.
Their team only thinks of Billy and Nick as useless old men and send them on impossible errands to get them out of the way while they struggle with the challenges. All the while the team is bullied by the intern leader of another team, Graham. The younger interns start to appreciate what Billy and Nick bring to their team after they bring the team together during a game of muggle quidditch against Graham's team. The team bonds even more when they are tasked to come up with an app. With no ideas, Billy and Nick talk the team into having a wild night on the town. Over the course of the night they open up to each other, overcome some of their personal hurdles, and ultimately conceive an idea for an app. Despite finding acceptance among their team, Billy and Nick still need to work hard and learn in order to succeed and pull their weight as Google interns.
Although this Twentieth Century Fox production, with a budget of fifty eight million dollars, takes place at the Google headquarters, the Googleplex, in Mountain View, California, most of the scenes were shot at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The Internship is not currently available on Netflix streaming services, but will hopefully find its way to Netflix soon.
